This made me think about what the actual employment rates are across the country and whether or not we have an optimal employment climate in the United States. It also made me wonder if there are any job creation solutions that could be borrowed from Utah.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jobs-by-state.jpg?resize=444%2C244&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-233\" width=\"444\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jobs-by-state.jpg?resize=1024%2C562&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jobs-by-state.jpg?resize=300%2C165&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jobs-by-state.jpg?resize=768%2C422&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/jobs-by-state.jpg?w=1231&amp;ssl=1 1231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did some research and found that <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.utah.gov\/wi\/update\/index.html\">Utah\u2019s current unemployment rate sits at 2.2%<\/a>, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/web\/laus\/laumstrk.htm\">lowest in the country<\/a>. The average unemployment rate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/u\/unemploymentrate.asp\">should be at 3% &#8211; 5%<\/a>, which is considered to be a healthy amount of unemployment. There will always be fluctuation in work as some people might be transitioning between jobs. This shows that Utah currently has a tight labor market in fact most jobs are filled. This would explain why a 2.2% unemployment rate is seen. Overall the unemployment rate in Utah is at a steady amount and most people have been able to find work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is starkly different compared to many other states in the country. According to US Bureau of Labor statistics, roughly two-fifths of all states have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/web\/laus\/laumstrk.htm\">unemployment rate at 4% or higher<\/a>, and nearly four-fifths of all states have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/web\/laus\/laumstrk.htm\">unemployment rate of 3% or higher<\/a>. This shows that across the nation we are at a good amount of unemployment. However, there are still 13 states that have exceptionally low unemployment and it&#8217;s important to find what factors cause each state to have low unemployment as compared to the rest of the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/work-from-home.jpg?resize=432%2C324&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232\" width=\"432\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/work-from-home.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/work-from-home.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/work-from-home.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/work-from-home.jpg?w=1136&amp;ssl=1 1136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those states with higher unemployment, there are many factors that might have caused unemployment rates to be so high. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/poverty-and-inequality\/tracking-the-covid-19-economys-effects-on-food-housing-and\">During the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, many jobs that required people to be in an office or work place other than their home were affected by pandemic safety protocols. This would include restaurants, tourism, and factories. The highest amount of unemployment reached was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2021\/03\/26\/in-some-states-unemployment-stays-stubbornly-high\">23 million unemployed Americans<\/a>, 9% of whom permanently lost their jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some states did not enforce stay at home orders and therefore, enjoyed less of an uptick in unemployment.\u00a0 For example, South Dakota did\u00a0 not have stay at home orders, which contributed to higher employment. Idaho, continued to have people work remotely and experienced inflows of people who traveled into the state for skiing and other activities. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2020\/4\/2\/21204511\/coronavirus-why-doesnt-utah-have-stay-at-home-order-covid-19-salt-lake\">Utah did not have stay at home orders<\/a> so there was minimal job loss. Additionally, people working remote jobs likely came into Utah for similar leisure activities such as skiing and snowboarding.\u200b\u200b In summary, the reason why Utah and other similar states saw less unemployment rates is because of their response to the pandemic. Finally, we observed during the pandemic that many office workers in more expensive states (such as California, Washington, and the Northeast) had the ability to work remotely and chose to relocate temporarily or permanently to less expensive states such as Idaho and Utah.\u00a0 Utah, also had a creative approach which tied employment to student visas, this allowed workers to come in and circumvent strict work visa policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?resize=748%2C499&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-231\" width=\"748\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/universalflyonthewall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ski-school.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 748px) 100vw, 748px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I visited Utah during the holiday season I was wondering why there were so many workers. After observing this I began to question what the employment rates were like in the country as I speculated they may have been lower. After reading about how the pandemic and other circumstances in the country impacted employment I got a better idea of why Utah\u2019s employment rates were high. In terms of employment, stay-at-home orders allowed for more people to keep their jobs.
